Coaching Staff

Ted Jones has been the Heat Varsity coach since our inaugural year in 2016.  He coached our very first team to a winning record and has kept a winning record each season since.  Under Ted’s leadership, our Varsity team has won the Michigan State Cup three years in a row!  In 2019, the Heat placed in the top four in the nation – the final games of the National Tournament were rained out without a champion named.  (If you ask Coach Ted, he’s positive the Heat would have won!)

Ted has been coaching soccer at various levels for the past 16 years. His overall record with the Heat is 72-21-7 with 10 of those losses occurring in the inaugural year of the club.  He looks forward to racking up more wins in the 2020 season.

While coaching, Coach Ted emphasizes fundamentals and excellence in play as well as forging team unity. Above all else, he focuses on helping his team develop Christ-like character both on and off the field.

Varsity Assistant Coach

Jon Suggitt

Coach Jon was an instrumental factor in our successful 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons and has high aspirations for 2020.  Coach Jon has been playing soccer for as long as he can remember. He played goalkeeper throughout high school. He attended Olivet College, where he played defense and goalkeeper for their soccer team. Jon continues to play soccer year-round on adult competitive and recreational leagues. His goal is and always has been, to help as many players as possible learn and enjoy this “beautiful game”.

Jon has his “E” coaching license and the updated Grassroots 11 v 11 coaching license. He has coached all levels and age groups from Kindergarten through High School. He coached for the YMCA, Northwest Screaming Eagles, SCOR, and for the Coopersville High School JV team. Coach Jon also runs goalie training sessions for Junior High and High School and has assisted at several soccer camps over the years. Jon has enjoyed working alongside Coach Ted for the past four seasons and looks forward to furthering his experience and knowledge.  He says, “I appreciate Ted’s coaching philosophy and approach, and I really look forward to assisting and watching as our players grow into Godly young men this season, both on and off the field.”

Coach Curt joined the Heat coaching staff in 2018 as head coach for the junior high and JV teams.  In 2019, Curt became the head coach for our JV team and brought home the State Championship! He continues to build off previous years as he prepares the boys for higher levels of play. Curt has played soccer since he was 5 years old, including 4 years of varsity soccer at Thornapple Kellogg High School as a Center and Right Mid-Fielder. Curt began coaching at the age of 23 and has coached many age groups from Kindergarten to high school age players for numerous organizations. He coached 8 years as an AYSO coach, 2 years for Thornapple Area Soccer Club (TASC), and was Assistant Coach for Thornapple Kellogg Boys JV.  To further expand his knowledge of the game, Curt has also completed 2 Meulensteen Soccer Training Courses. In his spare time, Curt serves as Vice President of Freedom Works, a local area non-profit, and serves as Front of House Sound Engineer and In-Ear Monitor Engineer at Ada Bible  Church.

JV Assistant Coach

Scott Staal

Coach Scott is honored to officially join the coaching staff at the Heat in 2019.  After playing soccer at a young age, Scott pursued other sports but rediscovered a passion for the game when he first volunteered to coach soccer with AYSO almost 10 years ago.  Realizing he was starting from scratch, he decided to be a student of the game by studying books and consuming countless videos and podcasts then spending time on the field learning the techniques for himself in order to effectively train his players from U6 to U11.  This approach paid off as he was sought out as one of the three inaugural coaches for AYSO United where he promoted his teams through two divisions in three seasons.  He also earned his U.S. Soccer E License in 2018. Scott is especially grateful for Coach Ted’s spiritual leadership and looks forward to working with Curt to strengthen the JV team and prepare the boys for higher levels of play.

Our Junior High coach is Dustin DeVries. Dustin’s love for the game of soccer began at the ripe age of four.  He has played for a variety of teams growing up and just finished his college soccer career last fall at Grace Christian University.  The team ended the season as regional champs and fourth in the nation.

Dustin has trained players as an assistant coach for various AYSO teams and as a Sports Specialist at the YMCA of greater Grand Rapids for past two years where he teaches players about good sportsmanship, skill, teamwork, and leadership.

Most importantly, Dustin takes his faith in Christ seriously and sees soccer as “an awesome avenue to play and honor God with our talents. It is a mission field, and an opportunity to share Christ through not just our play, but our sportsmanship and character off the pitch.”
